Fallen Officer Fund – Sgt. Daniel Sakai

On May 9, 2012, President Clarissa Balmaseda and NAAALEC member Lieutenant Jason Ta, San Jose Police Department; presented a check to Jennifer Sakai, widow of Sergeant Daniel Sakai who was killed in the line of duty. The check represented NAAALEC’s Fallen Officers Fund that provides family members financial assistance. This check for $2,500 will go towards Sgt. Daniel and Jennifer Sakai’s daughter JoJiye’s college fund.

On March 21, 2009, Oakland Police SWAT Sergeant Daniel Sakai at 35 was killed, along with another SWAT team member, Sergeant Ervin Romans, when the SWAT team attempted to apprehend a suspect that had earlier in the day shot and killed Sergeant Mark Dunakin and mortally wounded Officer John Hege, both of the Oakland Police Department, during a traffic stop.

Daniel Sakai was described as a special young man who was clearly a born leader. He was committed to public service and making a difference in other people’s lives; and Daniel Sakai was also described as a person that everyone looked up to and wanted to be.
